Fickle Me
After years of running Gnome at home and KDE at work, I’ve finally done a switcheroo and changed my home desktop. With version 3.5.5 (what I’m running with Ubuntu Edgy), it’s finally getting to be rather a nice desktop environment.
As it comes, it can be a bit sluggish at times, but turning down the effects (and turning off those awful annoying notification noises) helps solve that problem. It certainly feels a lot more complete that Gnome does, with better integration of the productivity suite. Amarok and Kontact, between them, are killer apps for me.
On the negative side of things – I don’t think Konqueror is ready for prime-time just yet, but then when Firefox is around there’s not much point in looking at other browsers. It would just have been that little bit more integrated (for example subscribing to feeds in Akregator works very nicely from Konqeror but is a bit of a filthy hack from Firefox).
Anyhoo – it’s all very nice – a fully set of good apps, great stability and fair performance.
