I have a bit of a love/hate thing going on with Stephen Donaldson. He manages to create the most loathsome, irritating and frustrating characters and then drops them into compelling storylines. I spend my time between urging them on then being frustrated when they stubbornly refuse to behave the way I would 🙂

Runes of the Earth is the first book in a Pentology (no, really) called the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Donaldson fans will no doubt have already encountered the First and Second chronicles. This really picks up from the last book of the second trilogy and offers more of the same. If you’re a fan, it’s ACEBEST. If you’ve never read anything, start with Lord Foul’s Bane, the first book of the First Chronicles.
