Final Fantasy II (GBA)

Ultima Tome GET! Legged it out of the tower and back to the castle, only to discover that most of the cities have been blown to bits by the Emperor’s cyclone.

So, charged up into the cyclone on the back of a Wyvvern and found myself in a big scary citadel full of nastier creatures than I’ve encountered before. Made short work of them, though – thanks to Ultima being a bit good (at least it is after it’s been levelled up a little).

Defeatored the Emperor, but I’m not going to say what happens next cos it’s a bit of a giveaway, but it’s not the end of the game yet.

On a cheery note – BARGAIN GET! Found Final Fantasy VI for PS1 in a second hand bin for 2.97, so that’ll be another one you’ll be hearing a lot of.

Leviathan escaped! I’ve finally managed to get inside that infernal tower and….. it’s vast. I’m on level seven at the moment. Every two levels there’s an elemental mage blocking the path. The creatures are getting a little trickier now, but I still outrank them a little.

Looks like the top-of-tower boss might be a toughie. After that, I guess it’ll be a showdown with the Dark Lord (for it is he).

Crystal Rod GET! The cave on the Mysidia continent was as easy as an easy thing. There’s not been many hugely difficult sections of FFII so far, but then as a long-time Final Fantasy fan, I understand the importance of levelling up and doing loads of random encounters, so my party is pretty uber 🙂

After retrieving the rod, I thought it prudent to do a bit more levelling – particularly Maria’s ‘osmosis’ (mana drain) and ‘death’ (what it says) spells, so I went for a spot of monster-hunting on the plains.

Duly levelled, I set sail in my little ship to the island where I think the Tower Of Doom(tm) is. Except – oh no! I’ve been eaten by a grue! I was sucked into a whirlpooly type thing and found myself in a red, fleshy dungeon. And Leila is missing (which is a blow, because she’s a dab hand with dual-sabres).

And it doesn’t have doors and stairs – it has valves and SPHINCTERS! Eeewwww!

White Mask Get! White Mask Placed! Time to head off to a cave to find the crystal rod which will allow access to the tower where the Ultima tome is hid0red.

Not encountering anthing remotely health threatening at the moment, but I have noticed a sharp increase in nastier creatures since getting the masks. I have a funny feeling the mid-game calm is about to break….

Bah – the secret passage to the white mask wasn’t where I thought it was. Which stands to reason, given that it wasn’t exactly a secret place. Anyway, I had a wee chat with Paul who did, in fact, know where the passage was and I’m now in a shin new dungeon under the castle. It’s hoaching with Adamantoises, though, but level 8 fire makes short work of them. I think once I’ve got the white mask, I need to do a bit of levelling before proceeding, cos my party is seriously unbalanced at the moment.

Back from Paris and what a dreadful, dreadful place that is. Still, a small amount of gameboying was dutifully carried out. I now have a shiny black mask and a cryptic incantation. The mask doesn’t do what I thought it might with the mirror, so I may have to hunt down Paul to have a chat with him. I need to get past the mirror to get the white mask, and I need the white mask (I think) to start getting some staffs which I need to get the Ultima Tome. Gah.

Missed my boys and girls. Very very glad to be back.

And so the saga continues. The Princess has been rescued…. again…. and returned safely to Altair. Rather than hanging about, though, the rebel army has gone and encamped just south of Fynn with a view to re-taking the castle. Or rather, they’ve kept the Imperial army occupied while I went to storm the castle.

So, castle stormed, commander defeated and……. ah bugger – it all went horribly wrong again. As expected, Minwu has got himself into trouble and needs rescuing. Loads of complicated nonsense needs worked out which involves half a dozen quests. All to do with magic mirrors, talking statues, books, masks and crystal staffs. Once all that’s organised, I need to go to a tower and liberate the Ultima tome. At which point I can presumably take on the end of game….. ah, I’m getting ahead of myself again cos I’m only fifteen hours in.

Argh! Damn you, Square, and your emotional plot twists.

The dungeon where the Wyvverns lay their eggs almost drove me nuts. It wasn’t particularly large, but it was complex and I kept getting lost. On top of that, it was hoaching with fiends. It’s taken me hours to get the job done. So, Wyvvern egg planted in its rightful place, and back to the castle – only to discover that the Wyvvern I hoped was going to help me has kicked the bucket.

So, back to Altair. Strange things are afoot – the princess has turned out to be a snake. She got all amorous and then turned out to be a Lamia in disguise. It appears that the real princess is still held by the empire and is being offered as a prize in a tournament, so I have to go and rescue her again. Honestly.

On top of all that, Minwu appears to be missing in action. He went off on a quest for ultimate magic (that old thing) and hasn’t come back yet. I can guess which mug is going to get the job of finishing his quest and rescuing him. First, though, I have to trudge through the desert and see if I can liberate the liability again.

This will hopefully come in the form of The Dragoons and their Wyvverns. Trouble is, I have no idea where they actually are. So, time to go hunting.

Well, the sacrifice wasn’t in vain – I’ve managed to retrieve the torch and transfer some magic fire to it – just. I left the dungeon with one character conscious and with his hitpoints almost totally depleted. The last two floors of the dungeon were beaten with brute force – not a scrap of mana to be found anywhere, and all potions depleted.

Wasn’t so much the difficult of the dungeons but the sheer number of weapons resistant Adamantoises. They can be defeated with standard weaponry, particularly if you have access to a way of cursing them to reduce accuracy (the Ancient Sword is good for this – you can find it in the same dungeon as the torch), but it takes a very long time. Level six fire is a rapid but mana-sooking way of dealing with them 🙂

Anyway, time to get the lit torch back to Altair.

A nice man called Josef kindly offered me a lift on his snow craft to go and get the Goddess’s Bell, so I can get something to carry some magic fire on. Unsurprisingly, this led to a cavern in the icy wastes to the north. I’m a bit annoyed at Cid being such a self-serving git – he could have helped, but didn’t.

Well, I got the Goddess’s Bell, but at what cost? Damn you, Square, and your tear-jerky emotional story lines. I feel empty.

Final Fantasy II (GBA)

Well, that was exciting! A lot’s happened since my last post, and I expect this will be a little heavy with the spoilers, but I’ll try not to give too many things away. Well, the raid on the Dreadnought didn’t go particularly well, with the net result that a good deal of the land has been bombed to hell. You wouldn’t have thought it possible for little SNES type characters to display such pathos in what is essentially a 15 year old game, but they manage it fantastically. It’s the same emotional storytelling which has kept the Final Fantasy series ahead of other RPGs for all those years.

So, I have a new problem, now. The Dreadnought is doing Bad Things(tm) and I know how to blow it up. Not only that, but I know where one of the components I’ll need to make a suitable bang is. I know where the second might be, but it’s behind a locked door. So, I think I need to do a bit of chatting with people.

On a cheerier note – I found Chocobos! So, I had great fun for half an hour or so charging around the world map on a giant yellow chicken. ACE! Also, I’ve been leveling up my Mage’s spellcasting abilities, so I have a couple of nukes at my disposal. I should probably go on a dungeon crawl or two as well, to raise enough cash to buy armour from the chancer that made off with my Mythril.

Well, given that my gametime last night was eaten by getting a battering at Meteos, I had no choice but to have an intense lunchtime sesh. So, Mythril returned to the queenie bint who cooed over it in a suitable manner and sent me to the blacksmith. I’m now tooled up with mythril weaponry.

Cheeky bugger though – it wasn’t enough that I risked life and limb to recover the mythril from nasty imperial types. And it wasn’t enough that I just gave them mythril to him. No, now he’s selling me armour and weapons at ridiculous prices. So, I have gleaming swords and maces and stuff and tatty old leather armour. So, I’ll need to thwap some goblin heads to fund my shiny clothes purchases.

Also, at some point, I have to go and blow up an airship. Which should be fun.

Final Fantasy II (GBA)

Mythril Mine ConX0r0red! Or something. There’s a lot more to FFII than meets the eye. For starters, there are far fewer random encounters on the world map, so just traveling to a place doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to beat any enemies you may encounter. Where the previous game had you outclassing most of the competition for the first half of the game, FFII pulls no such punches.

The main area of difficulty are the casters. The level of each individual spell rises quite sharply, but so does the corresponding mana use. Level 1 fire uses 1mp, but level 2 uses 2. Each use of mana will yield a very small increase in the amount of mana available, but the more powerful your spells are, the less yield you get between recharges. That sounds very confusing.

Basically, if it takes ten casts of level 1 fire to give you a 2MP increase in total mana, it will also take ten casts of level 2 fire to get the same increase. Now from the other direction. You have 10MP. Using it all to cast fire will give you a level upgrade for fire. Now you can only cast fire five times before you deplete your mana pool. So you have to rest / recharge more often. Or you have to carefully balance your spellcasting. Ethers are out of the question at the start cos they’re too expensive.

What I’m saying here is training a pure mage is very difficult – they have to be able to use melee or ranged weapons as well, because the mana is depleted too fast.

GAAAAH! I’m in stats heaven!

Good grief! Had my butt kicked in the first dungeon! The difficulty ramps up pretty quickly in this one. My main problem was I didn’t take nearly enough ethers with me.

Well, I’ll know the next time 🙂

Final Fantasy II (GBA)

It’s great. Really, it is. I seriously enjoyed FFI over the past few days and FF2 does the same but in a richer and deeper way (with only one very minor exception – the whole-world map is less pretty :)).

I think the thing I like best about this – other than the deeper story – is the skills system. Basically, rather than the character levelling up and all their skills magically improving as well, each skill improves with use. So, if you use a sword a lot, sword skills, health, strength and so on will improve. If you equip a shield, your shield skill will improve but you’ll take less damage, so your HP will increase more slowly. See?

Similarly, if you’ve bought fire and blizzard spells but use fire a lot and never use blizzard, then the fire spell will level up (they all have little XP bars :)) and blizzard won’t. But you’ll still get increases in mana and intelligence.

As you can see, there’s a lot to take in – sure, my caster can wear armor and carry a sword, but at the expense of her magical development. Similarly, it’d be great if my warrior could cast healing spells, but that’ll mean points will go into mana and intelligence that might be better placed elsewhere. And because all this happens through combat and skill use, rather than artificially allocating points at each level up, you’re guaranteed to get the party you play – whether you want them or not 🙂

So, so far I’m only a little more than an hour in and loving it.

Oh, and the PSP is crap 🙂

Ohhhh, it’s ACE. It’s just great. It’s slightly prettier looking than FF-I in a brain-maddening Escheresque impossible perspective kinda way, but still pretty simple. It’s the conversations that make the difference. Key words can be ‘learned’, allowing you to ‘ask’ other NPCs about them at a later date. You can also ask about items. The skills system seems to be much more finely grained than in the first game too.

Essentially, the first game was very much a ‘Final Fantasy on the move’ thing, consisting mainly of battles. Final Fantasy II is very much more RPG based, with a heavier emphasis on interaction. Having said that, I’ve still only played it for half an hour or so, so don’t hold me to it just yet.

Final Fantasy II (GBA)

I knew I’d cave. I had a go (about an hour or so) of Sword of Mana, but it’s not really gelling with me. It feels very like Kingdom Hearts and I just did NOT get on with that game. So, I thought I’d have a sneak peak at FF-2 – seeing as it’s on the same cartridge as FF-1 and all.

Well, the first thing I noticed was that there’s a lot more story to FF-2 – which is ACE. The only thing I can fault the first game on is lightness of story. But I enjoyed it so much that I just can’t help but launch into the sequel. Allegedly a longer adventure this time.
