Parsifal – Knappertsbusch, of course.
It’s a public holiday and I’m the only one in the department, so I’m taking the opportunity to indulge myself a little. It is Good Friday, after all, so only right that I should be listening to my favourite bit of music ever – Parsifal by Richard Wagner (Knap, natch). As an added bonus, Wagner’s epic music drama about the quest of an idiot to find the stolen Spear of Longinus with which to heal the mortally and eternally wounded Grail King, Amfortas, is set on and around Good Friday.
We used to have a tradition of spending this particular day of the year listening to this very opera, but it lapsed in the last couple of years due tot he amount of madness and instability in our lives, but today marks the beginning of things getting back to normal. And not before time, too.
