Neeyaaaaargh!

Ok, so I run fvwm2 and I’m very happy with it. It does absolutely everything I need with no frills, fuss, or bloat.

Except I also need to use pidgin as most of our inter-departmental communication is via jabber.

Except Pidgin is one of those applications written by the worst kind of code-hacker – the kind who thinks that ZOMG INCOMING IM == TEH IMPORTANT!

It steals focus. In 2009, a trivial instant messenger application actually steals focus, moves your mouse pointer and becomes the default responder for the keyboard.

So, where I was in the middle of typing in my password to run a sudo command – BANG, up pops pidgin and my password gets sent in plain text to whoever just happened to pop up a message.

I AM GOING TO STAB IT IN THE SPLEEN!

  • Maybe you need to “update your Desktop Environment” to something that lets you control focus stealing behaviour. bwahahahaha! Then again I use KDE 3.4 and it still sometimes doesn’t work the way I expect.
