Earth Defence Force (360)

Earth Defence Force Box ArtWell, that last post was a little less than meaningful, really. Bizarrely, it does manage to sum the game up quite well. At first look, I really wasn’t impressed. In fact, if it hadn’t been for the GIANT ANTS on the back of the box (I’m a huge fan of 50s B-movies) I’d never have got the game in the first place – it’s dressed as a squad-based shooter. Which it really isn’t. It’s probably closer to Serious Sam than anything else.

Anyway, I digress. The first five minutes were a bit of a disappointment, really – bland cityscape, lacklustre graphics, thick squad members who say incredibly inappropriate canned lines of dialogue.

But then the Ants appear. And the spaceships. And the giant stompy robots. And the giant jumping spiders. And it all becomes somehow wonderful. Everything is destructible – big stompy robot hiding behind that skyscraper? No problem – just blow up the skyscraper. Explosions the size of WICK are the order of the day, as are huge splats of insect goo as you send the marauders packing with some devastating piece of hardware from your arsenal of 200 unlockable weapons.

It’s an insane piece of frantic frenzied blasting that no self-respecting gamer should miss. Particularly if you love films like “Attack of the Killer Shrews”.

  • Isn’t it so beautifully progressive too. I love the way that you are steadily introduced to new critters seamlessly with the storyline.

I particularly like taking out the large flying saucers. It’s very Independence Day 🙂
