Castlevania – Circle of the Moon (GBA)
Nyeargh! I never realised how much I must have depended on potions and mind-ups from the shop in later Castlevania games. With the absence of a shop, Circle of the Moon is rock hard. Added to that, there’s no renewal of health after defeating a boss, so the limp back to the nearest save point with one pixel of health remaining is never pretty. Anyway, I’m currently exploring the big bell-towery thing which is full of the most annoying swipey swordy things I’ve ever encountered. To add insult to injury, there’s also a fair number of marionettes who just love to curse you, making you unable to whipped0r anything.
Anyway, there was a boss at the top of the bell tower – a big nasty thing sticking out of the wall. After having my backside handed to me several times by the thing, I decided to pop back to the previous room and grind a few levels – which I did. By happy chance, one of the downed baddies dropped the Thunderbird card. When combined with the Mercury card, it increases your damage output by the amount of the map uncovered – in my case 47%. The extra couple of levels plus the extra damage meant it was boss-pwnage time. So – boss gubbed, I popped through to the next room and pressed a switch which blew up a mummy case – and hopefully all the others as well.
On a happier note – I was in the shops the other day and found the original Castlevania (the NES version) for the GBA for the princely sum of six new pounds! BARGAINTASTIC!
