Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess (Wii)
I had to stop playing last night. It was another Ico moment – possibly the most exciting experience I’ve had in thirty or so years of playing video games. Without giving away any spoilers to anyone who’s not played the game yet, there’s a section about ten hours in where you (as Link) have to rescue a child from an Orc warrior riding on a boar, accompanied by a group of escorts. The experience of, first of all, taking part in a frenzied battle on horseback while swinging your sword and simultaneously trying to catch the bad guy, and then essentially duelling the boss (again, on horseback) on top of a towering viaduct is simply breathtaking.
My wee girl was watching me play and was getting quite emotionally involved, egging me on to rescue the child. Of course, thinking as a programmer now, there was never any real chance that I’d lose the boss – he’s obviously scripted to not go too far away – but at the time, I wasn’t a programmer, I was a young lad on the back of a horse. Amazing stuff.
