Ubuntu Linux
Having a bit of a love affair with this operating system just now. I’ve been using Linux in various guises since 1994 or thereabouts, but moved to FreeBSD at work and Macs at home a few years back. A good friend of mine introduced me to Ubuntu before buggering off back to Germany a few weeks back and, well, it’s very very nice. Nice enough, in fact, to find its way onto my Inspiron 6000 laptop. Unusually, for a Linux distro, it just works. Wireless, audio, 3D acceleration, everything. Also, the tools it ships with – particularly the update management and packaging system is very well thought out and coherent. It’s based on Debian, so the quality shouldn’t really come as a surprise. A particularly nice distinction is that it makes it very easy to keep your system free of non-GPLed software.
