Final Fantasy (GBA)

End of Game Boss. It’s one of those bosses which has a stupid amount of health which it can completely regenerate whenever it feels like it. It’s one of those bosses whose defeat depends upon you having two very specific spells available.

Which I don’t have.

But I could go off and get them.

But that would mean going through the SuckySuck(tm) part again. Oh yes, dear readers, Final Fantasy on the Gameboy Advance makes you fight all four dungeon bosses again before getting to the final boss.

Gah.

Well, I’m on Level 3 of the Cloud Fortress at the moment. And I’ve just noticed that since getting a class upgrade, my Knight and Ninja can now cast. So, once I get this pesky Wind Crystal, I suspect I’ll have to go to the Chaos Shrine for high-noon. So, I’ll stock up on some new spells as well 🙂

My characters are currently all on level 67, and their health seems to be pretty much maxed out.

Class Upgrade GET! I now have a Ninj0r. So, one crystal still to go. Something to do with the Rosetta Stone, I expect, so I’d better get blethering to people. I also managed to give one of the bosses in the Hellfire Chasm a good gubbing. Took some time, though, and there’s still three left :-/

I meant to play a bit of Astro Boy to give the Micro a work out but I had a quick look at Final Fantasy and ended up getting sucked in again. Wasn’t sure what to do next so just went for a wander. Rescued a fairy, got a Warp Cube from a robot (not sure what that does) and have a sneaking suspicion I need to o a tournament in a castle somewhere.

Oh! And I got Oxyale, so I’m currently on the 4th floor of the sunken shrine, trying to rescue some mermaids.

Anyway, I’m off to have a quick go of Astro Boy. In japanese.

Hellfire Chasm – what a git! I became hopelessly lost and wandered about for ages before getting to the boss. And I’m not sure it was worth it, given what I won by defeating him. But never mind.

Interestingly, after level 5 in the dungeon, there was a teleport back to the surface and a staircase down to a level six – which was full of very grumpy people who kept telling me to bugger off. So I did. Perhaps they’ll be a bit more polite in future.

Anyhoo, this was all last night. Today’s lunchtime gaming didn’t happen because I had to travel across to the other side of town to pick up Debbie’s pre-ordered fluorescent pink DS and two copies of Nintendogs. That’s my peace and quiet purchased for the weekend then 🙂

I don’t think there’s any need for a review of the Gameboy Micro (which I picked up from the sorting office this morning) – save to say ACEBEST. It’s very solid feeling, has a lovely lovely display and is teensy wee.

Dunno if it’s more comfortable to play Gameboy games on than the DS is (can’t be worse) cos I haven’t had a chance to put it through its paces. I think a session on Metal Slug or Astro Boy may be revealing. There certainly seems to be a lot more play on the d-pad and buttons than on the SP, but I’m not sure about the shoulder ones. I expected them to be hinged on the inside so the corners depressed, but they’re actually hinged at the corners. We’ll see 🙂

Airship get! And it’s ACE 🙂 The screen does a shift into a kinda mode 7 SNES 3D mode and the wee ship scrolls about the place in a zippy manner. Should make navigating the map a bit quicker. Before getting the airship, though, a bit of levistone fetching was required from the ice cavern – loads of jaggy floors and stuff.

Anyhoo, I’m just too tickled with the airship to do anything much except zip about and giggle like a fanboy.

In other news, my Gameboy Micro arrived (finally) from the far east. Even though it wasn’t supposed to – but it’s a long and tedious story. Anyway, it’s currently being held for ransom by the post office who are demanding coinage to set it free. So, tomorrow, Final Fantasy will be moved from one gameboy to t’other.

FIRE CRYSTAL AWAKENATED!

Mount Gulg was less imposing than expected, although the constant health drain of walking on lava had to be watched pretty closely. I’ve noticed a strange thing about the amount of experience handed out in the game, though. Defeating a couple of 300HP Minotaurs occasionally yields 2000xp, but defeating the dungeon boss yielded a paltry (and eerily precise 576xp). Oh well.

Another thing that’s wierd is defeating the boss and finding myself still in the depths of the dungeon without a glowy shortcut out 🙂 I guess I’ve been playing too many Zelda games 🙂

So, back to the nearest village for a sniff about. I need to find something to spend the massive amount of cash I’ve accumulated on.

I’m not afraid to admit it. After defeat0ring the Earth spirit (a Lich) and returning the glowy goodness to the earth crystal, I figured it was logical to pop along to the earthgift shrine for a nose – given they’d gone to the trouble of showing me a wee cutscene of it.

Well, it’s a relatively straightforward five level dungeon, populated by relatively straightforward enemies. And four evil bosses. Who promptly devoured my spicy brains.

So, I have left them to their own devices and ventured to Crescent Lake, were I’ve been given a canoe and sent packing to Gulg Mountain by some bearded weirdoes. Gulg mountain is a volcano and alleged to be the home of the fire spirit. Which is why I’m going there, armed with level 6 Death, a handful of potions and a beardy-granted canoe.

And once I have triumphed there (and hopefully returned glowy goodness to the Fire crystal), I shall return to Earthgift shrine and open a can of “that’ll teach ye, ye pixelated bastards!” on the boss’ collective posteriors.

So, in a word (or two) CANOE GET!

EARTH STAFF GET! Phew! Got the the end of the third level of the Cavern of Earth and met the pointy toothed one. A swift staking later and I realised that things weren’t going to be as straightforward as expected. So, off on a quick voyage back to where I came from, fed a big grey bloke with some precious substances and then chatted with an old bloke who gave me the Earth Staff. He didn’t insult me, though, so it’s not all bad.

I’m currently using all three memory slots to keep multiple saves. Single slot saves in RPGs are WRONG.

Well, I’ve come across a little village which is looking a little rough. Thing is, the Earth is decaying because the four crystals have gone out and it appears that the closer you get to where the energy sources were there worse the decay gets.

Anyhoo, it appears that there’s a vampire in the Cavern of Earth which is blocking the flow of energy to that crystal, so off I went in search of the bugger. Level one of the earth cavern is just hoaching with monsters – in one area it’s a new encounter almost every step. It took me the better part of an hour to scope out the top floor. So, I’ve nabbed all the treasure there is to nab and found where the stairway to level two is, then popped back outside for a bit of recuperation.

Ffgba001 Ss Preview I 5836

So – that’s me for this lunchtime – there’ll be more adventuring this evening, I expect. On an interesting side note, though, I had a rummage through the Bestiary section (above right). It’s ACE! It’s an option from the title screen but is also available in game as well – and it’s awesome. It’s kind like having a strategy guide along with you as it gives tons of random details about the beast you’re looking up. Also, it covers FF I and II, and is pre-populated with question marks – so it’s going to be a MUST….. FILL…. THE…. WHOLE….. THING….. IN….. thing. So – that’ll be me for the next ten years – scouring the landscape hunting for some level one mole that I missed at the start 🙂

Bad Place pillaged, other stuff done, many baddies defeat0red. It was a fairly extended session last night, but then Final Fantasy is like that. Amongst other things, I chatted with some dwarfs in a mine, got loads of Mythril weapons, and helped blow a dirty great chunk of land to kingdom come – conveniently making a neat channel where my ship can go. Having the ship to aid with getting-around-quickness is ACEBEST. I now have a whole new continent stretching out before me….

Potion used, pointy-eared bloke awakened. So that little quest netted a bunch of armour and weapon upgrades, 17,000 gil, all in – and about 345873498579 experience points. The party is now at level 17. One final artifact gained from the quest is a key which opens various locations around the world map and….. a whole pile of rooms in the third level of the march cave :-/

So, I’m off to The Bad Place again.

VICTORY TRIUMPH GET!

Well, the cave turned out to be interesting but a tad more straightforward once I’d levelled up a bit. Anyway, the thing I thought was there was indeed, so I liberated it from the clutches of some piscademons. After that, I popped up north to discover I’d been hoodwinked by a Dark Elf. It was an interesting battle – his opening attack was level 3 DEATH which, fortunately, missed. Anyhoo, Crown and Crystal gained, and I’m now off to the other side of the world to talk to a witch about a potion.

Well, after my humiliating defeat at the cave (haven’t I heard that line before somewhere?) I’ve made a tactical retreat (read: ran away) to lick my wounds. I’ve managed to limp all the way back to the Elfie village (with one member of my party still conscious) where I’ve spent what money I had on some new spells, potions and an armour upgrade or two.

The main problem I’m having at the moment is that I’m running out of Mana too quickly and I think I know why. Higher level spells are available as soon as the party member has attained that level, but use massively more mana than lower level spells. i.e. just because my level 11 black mage can cast a level 3 spell, doesn’t mean she should – I think I need to level up a bit more or be a little more judicious with the high level stuff.

As an interesting side note, there’s a little row of gravestones in the Elf village – one of them bears the name “Link” 🙂
